Scratch It

Learn Photography from Scratch with us & have fun

For some reason, since using the DSLR, most of my pictures turn out too light / bright.
That is really bugging me.
I've tried to play with the modi on the camera (like pre setting for shadow, sunlight, electric light, etc.)
It works a bit better, but I guess I would have to use the white balance adjustment right then and there.

But how? Where? :)

With most cameras you can adjust the white balance right at the camera. Even my tiny Casio P&S had it.
Did I ever use it? Not really.
I edited the pictures afterward, with loss of quality.

Now what I want YOU & ME to do, is to find out IF your camera has an adjustable white balance (I'm sure it does).
Then I want you to play with it while shooting. Go away from auto setting and play with it. Go from one extreme to the other and try to find a feel for it.

Let's get started :)

P.S.: You can add Photos to your profile, you can add them to folders & just put a link in here that leads us to the pictures to check them out.
Post your BEST shot in here :)
Let's have fun!

I don't believe my Canon SD500 has that option, but I'll have to look into it more.

Look it up, even with my tiny Casios you can play with it :)

I'm going to give this a shot...no pun intended. Work consumes me, but I need some fun!

Not a prob - whenever you have time hop by :D
Shoot away your ideas as well ;)

Because as usual, I have no idea where to start.
That's why I'm not a teacher :D

I did my first batch of test shots yesterday. Just need to resize them and label them with the auto settings I used. I will upload them maybe some time today :D

Now I need to read the manual and see where I can change the white balance settings by hand.

Wow, 214 photos. So which ones are the test shots? :D

Haha! I have a very old crummy point and shoot Olympus thingy that is five years old. Have to see what it actually does if I bother to play with the settings... :D

Go ahead with it, you might be surprised.
Even my first 5 year old Casio did let me play with it :)

And there's a thread in the forum where you can make suggestions for more assignments too ;)

My photos for this assignment are here. I've posted a compilation comparing some of the different modes (mainly modes useful for a daylight source) and a sort of "best" shot. I've been mainly shooting food the last few days. Not exactly exciting stuff. I did photograph an event at my local gym recently, but I haven't finished going through them yet. If anything, the white balance function does a nice job of warming up shots.

*Off to check them out*

I am still trying to figure out where my manual settings for this are to be found, sigh :)

As a suggestion, try looking up your camera's manual online. Some companies keep copies on their websites. It might have what you're looking for.

Cool idea.
I have the manual right here though & an accompanying book that I bought - I'm just getting distracted so easily :D
